Pennsylvania police are searching for the emotionally disturbed woman who jumped from a car traveling at high speed on a highway Friday.
Susan L. Bachman's parents were driving her to Clarion Psychiatric Center as a voluntary commitment when she reached for the door handle just after 8 a.m., according to local media.
Her father Bill Bachman, who tried to stop his daughter from jumping, says he was driving between 60 mph and 65 mph at the time but managed to slow down to about 50 mph before she got out, reported Centre Daily News.
Bachman, 37, rolled for a bit when she hit the ground but managed to get back on her feet and flee into the woods off Interstate 80 near Brookville.
Her family fears she may have sustained internal injuries upon impact.
"We really want out daughter back. Please help us find her," her mother Nancy Bachman said in a video statement.
The Bachmans say their daughter is a cheerful and generous when she is not going through one of these episodes. But lately she has been suffering from depression and anxiety, said local station WTAJ.
Police were already on the scene to help what appeared to be a vehicle in distress. Search and rescue personnel, firefighters, blood hounds and helicopters arrived soon after to conduct a five-hour search of the area.
They found Bachman's wallet with her driver's license, credit card, ATM card and her cellphone in an abandoned barn.
The family quickly started the website findsusanbachman.com and they have been emailing media to publicize her disappearance.
They also organized another search of the area that is scheduled for noon Monday. Participants are asked to meet at the Travel America truck stop just off Interstate 80 Exit 78.
Bachman graduated from Penn State University twice with degrees in life sciences and nursing but has been unable to work in recent years because of her emotional issues.
Her parents decided to get her professional help on an expert's recommendation and decided upon Clarion Psychiatric Center in part because they would take her in as a voluntary commitment. Similar institutions in the area wanted to classify her placement as involuntary, according to Centre Daily News.
Police say she is 5-foot-4 and about 120 pounds. She has red hair and was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt and blue jeans.
"If you know where she is and you have contact with her, please tell her that we love her and want her back very much," her father said in the video statement.
Anyone with information concerning Bachman's whereabouts is asked to contact Pennsylvania State Police at 814-371-4652 or her parents at FindSusanBachman@gmail.com.
